In this article, David Conte asserts that Ralph Vaughan Williams's "Three Shakespeare Songs" represent a supreme achievement in the repertoire of twentieth-century unaccompanied choral compositions. Moreover, the songs brilliantly fulfill the original pedagogical purpose: to provide a challenging and grateful work for choral singers, using texts of the highest literary and spiritual quality. Conte shows the logic with which it is possible to apply moveable do solfege to ensure good intonation and to increase singers' awareness of the expressive character of certain notes and intervals, particularly in relation to the text. The author provides three tables to show phrase structure and tonal centers of each section, all of which will greatly aid the conductor in interpretation, pacing, and memorization.

A Study of Aaron Copland’s Sketches for “Inscape” - David Conte, DMA Thesis, Cornell University, 1983
This thesis reconstructs Aaron Copland’s compositional process in his last orchestra work, “Inscape,” through a detailed cataloguing and analysis of his sketches. The author conducted his research at Mr. Copland’s home during the summer of 1982, where he had complete access to Copland’s extensive sketches for this work.
Aaron Copland’s Piano Quartet - An Analysis - David Conte, MFA Thesis, Cornell University, 1981
Copland’s "Piano Quartet” of 1950 represents his first thorough application of the twelve-tone technique. The following analysis examines how Copland assimilated various aspects of the technique into his already-defined musical language. Copland wrote in a letter to the author after reading this thesis: “I must tell you how very impressed I was with your analysis of my 30-year old work. I confess, however, that, at the time of composing, I was not aware of several of the points you made…with which, incidentally, I agree.”
